Across the United States and here in Wisconsin, tens of thousands of people go through the process of divorce every year. While divorce is in no way ideal, it is a reality of life. However, it is important to remember that not only are the adults in the situation going through divorce, but the children are as well. For many parents, the first priority is the kids. Fortunately, there are many things you can do to assist your children through the divorce. According to WebMD, one of the most important things you can do is maintain as much consistency as possible.

Children flourish with consistency. Probably somewhat obviously, it is ideal to keep the kids in the same living situation and school system if at all possible. Keeping consistency in your child’s routine will help them maintain a normal lifestyle even if the divorce is causing difficulties.

Another thing to keep consistent is the rules of the house. Many parents, understandably feeling guilty about the divorce, will end up buying their children extra toys and treats and may let them stay up later and other niceties. However, if you really want to ensure that your kids get through the divorce as cleanly as possible, it is important to maintain the same amount of firmness that you did when you were together with your soon-to-be ex-spouse.

Even in the event that your divorce is acrimonious, try to keep negative comments about your ex-spouse away from your child. Even though you are no longer married to your ex-spouse, they will forever be your child’s other parent. Speaking neutrally about them is key.
